  • What nervous system regulation actually means
  • Signs your body is stuck in sympathetic mode
  • Where chiropractic fits in a whole-body plan

Dr. Tyler Shearer is a chiropractor at Ideal Family Chiropractic, a neurologically focused, family-centered practice in North Logan, Utah. The practice works with kids, moms, and babies to get to the root cause of stress in the nervous system, with a particular focus on pregnancy, postpartum, and pediatric care. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, his approach starts from the idea that there is a reason behind what the body is communicating, and that families deserve help figuring it out together.

His work centers on how the nervous system regulates every other system in the body, and on what happens when it stays stuck in a stress response. In his office, that assessment is not left to feel alone. He uses INSiGHT scans, including heart rate variability, surface EMG of the spinal muscles, and thermal scanning, to look at nervous system function objectively. He describes chiropractic as the body's electrical system, working alongside nutrition, strength training, and physical therapy rather than replacing them.

On Healing at Your Core, Dr. Shearer joined Bree to explain what nervous system regulation actually means and how stress can turn up the volume on pain. They talked through the signs of living in sympathetic mode, why telling someone to just relax rarely works, and why sleep alone is not enough recovery. He was candid about the evidence for chiropractic care, describing the balance of research, practitioner experience, and patient preference that shapes his clinical decisions.

Ideas worth carrying forward

A few grounded takeaways from Tyler’s conversation with Bree.

Regulation is about the return trip, not the absence of stress.

Everyone encounters stress, and the sympathetic response is necessary for sprinting, competing, and responding to illness. Dysregulation is when the body does not come back down to rest in a reasonable amount of time, so heart rate and tension stay elevated.

You can be running hot without noticing it.

When a stress response becomes normal, people stop registering it. Persistently elevated blood pressure or heart rate, trouble regulating body temperature, poor sleep, jaw clenching, and heightened pain sensitivity can all be clues worth discussing with a clinician.

Stress narrows the body's capacity to process pain signals.

Tight muscles limit joint motion and reduce proprioceptive input to the brain, leaving more room for pain signals. Dr. Shearer describes it as a stress bucket: when it is overfull, you become more sensitive physically and emotionally.

Recovery has to be more than sleep and scrolling.

Six to eight hours in bed is necessary but usually not sufficient. Deep belly breathing, a walk, time with a friend, massage, or acupuncture may do more for the nervous system than passive time on a screen.
